Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Belarus and Permanent Representative to the CIS statutory and other bodies, Nazarguly Shagulyev, informed media representatives that Turkmenistan's leadership role in the Commonwealth marks a significant step in the development of the state's foreign policy course based on its neutral status.
"Turkmenistan's leadership role in the CIS represents an important milestone in implementing our country's consistent foreign policy course, the foundation of which is neutrality – friendly relations with neighbors, mutual respect and equal partnership. The exercise of this role will be carried out in accordance with the fundamental documents of the Commonwealth," TASS news agency quoted the diplomat as saying.
Shagulyev noted that Turkmenistan views the CIS as a key regional platform uniting states with a common historical past, linguistic ties, shared interests and economic connections.
With the beginning of 2026, leadership functions in the Commonwealth bodies were transferred from Tajikistan to Turkmenistan, which will chair the Council of Heads of State, the Council of Heads of Government, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Economic Council, the Council of Permanent Representatives of Commonwealth states to the statutory and other bodies, as well as the Commission on Economic Issues under the Economic Council.
Today in the Belarusian capital, under Turkmenistan's chairmanship, the first meeting of permanent representatives of Commonwealth countries to the CIS statutory and other structures will take place. At this meeting, as Shagulyev reported, the concept of Turkmenistan's chairmanship in the CIS for the current year and the strategy for its implementation will be presented.
